The one-hour setup guide for new restaurants

Most restaurants overthink their tech stack. Here is how to get a complete order and inventory system running before your first lunch service.

The one-hour setup guide for new restaurants

Opening a restaurant is overwhelming. Between permits, hiring, and menu testing, technology often becomes an afterthought — or an overthought. Some owners buy every gadget on the market. Others rely on a notepad and prayer. Neither approach scales.

Step one: map your flow

Before you install anything, walk through your service flow from the guest's perspective. Order placement → kitchen communication → food delivery → payment. Every gap in that chain is a place where technology can help or hurt. Do not add tech for tech's sake. Add it where the friction lives.

Step two: choose one platform

The biggest mistake new restaurants make is using five different apps that do not talk to each other. Your POS sends orders to one place. Your inventory lives in a spreadsheet. Your schedule is on a whiteboard. When those systems do not connect, you become the connection — and that is a full-time job you do not have time for.

Step three: test with real orders

Set up your system during a soft opening or a friends-and-family night. Do not wait for the grand opening to discover that your kitchen display is too bright or that your servers cannot find the modifier button. Real orders reveal real problems. Fake orders reveal nothing.

Step four: train in the moment

The best training happens during service, not in a back office. Have your team use the system for one shift with a manager standing by. Answer questions in real time. Correct mistakes immediately. By the end of the shift, the system will feel like part of the kitchen, not an add-on.

A good system should disappear into the background. If you are still thinking about your technology after week two, it is the wrong technology.
